We get it. The wedding invitation lands, the conference is interstate, or the flight home does not touch down until close to midnight, and the first thought is not what to wear. It is who will be with the children while you are away. Overnight babysitting is built for exactly those nights, and it is a far more ordinary part of family life than most parents expect.
Here is how an overnight shift actually works at The Care Collective: what your sitter does between 7pm and 7am, what it costs, and how to plan care around a wedding, a work trip or a flight that leaves before sunrise.
What overnight babysitting covers
An overnight shift runs from 7pm to 7am. Your sitter arrives before bedtime, which matters more than it sounds. It means your children meet the person looking after them while the house is still bright and busy, rather than in a dark hallway at the end of a long evening.
A typical night looks like this:
- Dinner or supper if the children have not already eaten, plus the tidy up afterwards
- Bath, teeth, pyjamas and the bedtime story, in your usual order
- Settling each child to sleep using the routine they already know
- Staying awake until the house is genuinely quiet
- Resting nearby, ready to respond to a wake up, a bad dream or a sore tummy
- Morning wake ups, breakfast and getting everyone dressed
- A handover note covering how the night went, including any wake ups
The flat nightly rate assumes a child wakes two times or fewer. If the shift turns into sustained active care beyond that, for example a child who is unwell and needs settling again and again, the hourly rate applies for that period. We put that in writing before you book, because a surprise on an invoice is the fastest way to lose a family’s trust.
The nights families book it for
Weddings and milestone celebrations
Weddings on the coast rarely wrap up by nine. Booking a sitter from late afternoon through to the following morning means you can stay for the speeches, the dancing and the long wait for a taxi, without watching the clock or carrying three sleeping children out to the car at midnight.
Work travel and early flights
If one parent is away and the other has a 5am departure, an overnight sitter closes the gap neatly. Your children wake in their own beds, to their own breakfast, with someone who was already in the house when they fell asleep.
Hospital stays and family emergencies
Labour that starts at 2am. A grandparent admitted suddenly. One child in emergency while the other two need to stay exactly where they are. These are the calls that come at no notice, and they are the reason we hold availability open for urgent bookings.
A night that is simply yours
Not every overnight booking has a logistical reason behind it. Some parents book one because they want a dinner that lasts three hours and a morning that does not begin at 5.30am. That is reason enough.
Who is in your home while you sleep
Handing over your house keys asks more of you than a three hour evening booking does, so it is worth saying plainly what we have already done long before a sitter is offered an overnight shift.
Every carer at The Care Collective is screened before they meet a single family. Only around the top 20 per cent of applicants make it through. That process covers a valid Working with Children Check, current First Aid and CPR, and referees we contact and speak with ourselves. If you want the detail, our screening process is set out step by step.
The part that matters most overnight is this: our carers are employed by The Care Collective. They are not contractors we hand your address to. They are insured as our employees, supported by our team, and accountable to us. If something goes sideways at 2am, you call us. We have written more about why employed carers work differently, and it is the single biggest reason families stay with us.
What overnight babysitting costs
Overnight care is billed per night rather than per hour. All rates are GST inclusive and apply any night of the week:
- 1 child: $275 per night
- 2 children: $297 per night
- 3 children: $330 per night
- 4 children: $363 per night
- 5 children: $385 per night
Those figures cover the 7pm to 7am window. If you need your sitter to arrive earlier, say at 4pm so you can get ready without an audience, the earlier hours are billed at our casual babysitting rate, which starts at $56 per hour Monday to Saturday for one or two children, with a three hour minimum on casual bookings. As a worked example, three hours of weekday babysitting for one child is $168.00.
A fuel allowance of $1.10 per kilometre applies if your sitter uses their own car to transport the children, which usually only comes up on a morning school run.
Every rate for every service sits on our pricing page, and the wider babysitting service page explains how casual and overnight bookings fit together.
Getting your home ready for the night
The difference between a smooth overnight shift and a long one is nearly always preparation, and almost all of it is about your house rather than your sitter.
- Where they will rest. A made up spare bed, a couch with fresh linen, or a mattress in the nursery. Say which, and leave a towel out.
- The bedtime routine, written down. The order of events, which songs, which comforter, which door stays open, which light stays on.
- What happens when someone wakes. Whether your toddler settles with a hand on the back or needs picking up. Whether your six year old is allowed into your bed. Whether the dummy goes back in.
- Medicines and allergies. Names, doses, timing and location, on paper on the bench rather than in a text message.
- Food. The breakfast plan, anything off limits, and where the snacks live.
- House basics. Wifi password, how to lock up, the alarm code, which tap runs scalding, and the number of a neighbour who will be home.
- Your contact plan. Whether you want a message once the last child is asleep, or silence unless something is wrong.
Our guide to preparing your home for a new sitter works through all of this in more depth, and it is worth ten minutes before your first overnight booking.
Overnight babysitting or house sitting?
They are two different jobs and families mix them up often. Overnight babysitting is care for your children in your home while you are out or away. House sitting is looking after the house itself, along with the pets, the bins, the mail and the plants, while the whole family is away. House sitting is billed at $110 per night Monday to Thursday and $165 per night Friday to Sunday, with a 24 hour minimum.
Families flying out for a week usually want house sitting. Families out for a single night want overnight babysitting. Some longer trips need both. Tell us the dates and we will work out which combination fits.
Frequently asked questions
How far ahead should I book overnight babysitting?
For a wedding or a planned trip, two to three weeks gives us the best chance of matching you with a sitter your children already know. Urgent bookings are genuinely welcome and we fill plenty of them the same day, but the pool of available sitters is naturally smaller at short notice.
Can we have the same sitter each time?
Wherever their availability allows, yes, and we actively try to make it happen. Familiarity is most of what makes an overnight shift easy on a child, so we keep families and sitters paired when we can.
What happens if my child wakes up repeatedly?
Your sitter settles them, the same way you would. The flat nightly rate covers up to two wake ups. If the night becomes sustained active care beyond that, the hourly rate applies for that time and it appears clearly itemised on your invoice rather than buried in a total.
Can the sitter do the morning school run?
Yes. The overnight shift ends at 7am, which already covers breakfast and getting everyone dressed. If you also need the school or daycare drop off, add those hours at the casual rate and flag it when you book. The $1.10 per kilometre fuel allowance applies if your sitter drives the children in their own car.
Ready to take the night off?
Whether it is a wedding on the coast, a 5am flight, a hospital stay or simply one night where nobody needs you at 2am, we can cover it. Book overnight babysitting online in a couple of minutes, or get in touch on 0451 394 018 if you would rather talk it through first. We look after families right across the Gold Coast and Brisbane, and we would love to lighten your load for a night.
